Republicans respond to Obama’s speech
by cody on Sep.11, 2009, under Politics
Republicans in congress have been trying to get the President and Democrats to listen to their ideas for months, but none of them are listening. Hopefully Republican congressmen will be able to get their attention before any bills are passed.
Building a desktop compter for under $200
by cody on Sep.11, 2009, under Guides
This guide was originally on my site months ago but I deleted it when I redid the site. Luckily I had a backup. So this has been updated and is now a few bucks over $200, but the basic idea is still here.
This is a short guide to buying all the components you’ll need for a cheap computer and gives information about each component.
By selecting parts only from Newegg.com I wanted to see if I could get all the components for a desktop computer and it cost no more than $200. ($200 not including the monitor and other accessories , just the computer.) Ill update the example items and prices every few weeks.

Free and/or Open Source Software Pick: WWII Warfare and Ubuntu 9.04
by cody on Sep.02, 2009, under Free/Open Source Software
I’m sorry i wasn’t able to post the past few days, and to make up I’ve picked two things for the software of the day pick.
WWII Warfare:
WWII Warfare is an online game where you control a base in world war two. You can construct buildings and train troops, as well as attack other players and defend against attacks.
WWII Warfare is an awesome MMO and there are thousands of people who play it. It is text-based, similar to other web-MMOs such as Kings of Chaos, although it has a lot more features than most Web based MMOs I’ve played.
This games free and it runs in your browser, so go check it out:
Ubuntu 9.04:
Everyone knows about Ubuntu and this release has been out for awhile, but I havn’t used Ubuntu for the past few months at all.
So when I got a new laptop that was plagued with viruses I thought it was a great chance to try out the latest Ubuntu release. It turned out way better then any past release I’ve used. The wireless just instantly worked. I didn’t need to do anything to get it working the way I wanted(aside from changing the theme).
So if you’ve been thinking about trying Ubuntu, now is a great time to try it out:
I hope you liked my software picks for today. If you have any suggestions just comment.
Free/Open Source Software Pick: Feather Linux
by cody on Aug.26, 2009, under Free/Open Source Software
Feather Linux is a distribution of Linux aimed at being as small as possible, while still being very usable. Feather Linux succeeds tremendously at both, although there is one problem. The development on Feather Linux has been dormant since 2005, which means, none of the packages are up to date.
You could use Damn Small Linux or Puppy Linux, but my favorite was always Feather Linux. It always seemed so much more cleaner and usable than DSL or Puppy.
I hope that someone who is capable will pick up where the developers of Feather Linux left off. There are still people interested in using it. So all that would need to happen is for someone to update the main packages in the last Feather Linux release and a lot of people would start using Feather Linux again.
I don’t currently have the know-how or abilities to restart the project but if someone was willing to I would be more than happy to host it and run the website for it.
Right now I can only wish that someone would step forward and help get the ball rolling.

The Daily Free and/or Open Source Software Pick
by cody on Aug.25, 2009, under Free/Open Source Software
Ok, from now on I’m going to have a daily post containing a free and/or open source software project.
It will range from games to desktop apps, and from operating systems to system utilities.
Today’s software pick is a game called “8 Kingdoms“. 8 Kingdoms is a fantasy turn-based real-time-strategy game. You are a King and you must lead your nation to victory. There a various types of units available as well as many buildings.
The graphics are not the best but they are still 3-D, Plus the gameplay is addictive enough that you’ll forget about the graphics pretty darn quick.
The game features a single player mode (Versus the computer) and a multiplayer mode (LAN and internet).
Overall I really enjoyed the game. I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would.
Anyone who in any way likes real-time-strategies will like the game.

I Have Never Forgotten You:The Life & Legacy of Simon Wiesenthal
by cody on Aug.23, 2009, under Links
This movie is one of the greatest documentaries I have ever seen. Its the life story of a man who dedicated his entire life to bringing Nazi war criminals to justice.
Its sad that there are people in the world that actually deny that the Holocaust ever existed. You can’t deny something that has so much evidence and surviving witnesses, as well as the people who committed the crimes admitting to it.
Denying the Holocaust is almost as bad as committing the actual crimes. First these people were murdered and now people are trying to murder any trace of them left.
President Obama starting to listen???
by cody on Aug.17, 2009, under Politics
On Sunday President Obama’s administration officials stated that instead of having a government-run health care plan that they would be willing to have consumer-owned nonprofit health care cooperatives.
A consumer-owned health care cooperative is a health insurance company that is ran by it’s customers. So instead of focusing on profit, the company focuses on keeping the price as low as possible while keeping the quality as high as possible. Since the company is owned by the people who use it, the only decisions the company will make are those that benefit the consumers.
Instead of complete government control, new health care cooperatives set up would have to follow a certain set of rules like all insurance companies are supposed to.
Congressional Republicans have been trying to push consumer owned health coops instead of one government run plan for along time and now it seems they might have been heard.
Could the Obama administration be opening up? Could they be beginning to listen to both Democrats and Republicans?
*Update*
It seems alot of democrats in congress say they wont pass a health care bill unless there is a government controlled public option, even though a cooperative would have the exact same effect, lowering healthcare costs by forcing other companies to compete against them. A good number of senate democrats disagree with a public option as well as most congressional republicans. So getting a public option to pass in congress is almost impossible.
Sen. Kent Conrad (D-ND): “there are not the votes in the United States Senate for the public option”.
Hopefully it will force the majority of democrats to listen to the republicans’ ideas and compromise.
